California. Hear Ye! Hear Ye!

Eric Hernan Gamonal, Xsquire [#100805], age 31, of Sherman Oaks, California has been nom­i­nated by the State Bar of California for induc­tion into the Evil Esquire Bar Association as an inter­minable member.

Gamonal resigned from the Cal Bar on March 16, 2007 (that was fast, he was just admit­ted on November 19, 2004). Reading fur­ther, it appears Eric likes chil­dren. According to the Bar he attempted to com­mit a “lewd act on a child.”

As is their cus­tom, the Cal Bar gives lawyers the oppor­tu­nity to resign before they pros­e­cute them. This enables the lawyer to peti­tion for rein­state­ment at a later date with­out the “stigma” of hav­ing been for­mally dis­barred. In some instances it has even allowed lawyers to be admit­ted to prac­tice or to main­tain their lawyer licenses in other juris­dic­tions. In this instance, the California Bar has not made pub­lic their “charges” against Gamonal so we had to do a lit­tle dig­ging to find the par­tic­u­lars of Eric’s attempt to com­mit a lewd act on a child.

Turns out the good folks over at Perverted Justice had ensnared Eric in one of their pedophile traps.  They use Internet chat rooms, instant mes­sag­ing and the like to lure the preda­tors into meet­ing with “chil­dren.”  When the preda­tor shows up at the appointed time and place, the cops are there to greet them.  According to Perverted Justice, here’s how Eric’s sting went down.

[he] arrived at our Riverside sting oper­a­tion [on January 22, 2007] and was arrested along with fifty other “charm­ing” indi­vid­u­als. Gamonal was taken into cus­tody and didn’t get his dream date of a thir­teen year old girl.

Gamonal was sen­tenced to six months in prison, five years pro­ba­tion and reg­is­tra­tion as a sex offender. So hope­fully he’ll get the help he needs and can be back prac­tic­ing law soon!
