Ohio. Hear Ye! Hear Ye!

On this date in the Buck­eye State, the Ohio Supreme Court voted to per­ma­nently dis­bar for­mer munic­i­pal court Judge Don McAu­li­ffe, age 64, who is cur­rently serv­ing a 10 year prison term at the fed­eral prison in Mor­gan­town West Vir­ginia. McAu­li­f­fee was con­victed in 2004 for arson, con­spir­acy, money laun­der­ing and mail fraud for par­tic­i­pat­ing in a scheme to burn down his Buck­eye Lake house and col­lect­ing the $235,000 insur­ance pay­out. Guess he wanted to mod­ern­ize the property.

Accord­ing to the Colum­bus Dis­patch, the Ohio Supreme Court held off dis­bar­ring McAu­li­ffe until he’d exhausted his appeals.

So a law license isn’t like a dri­vers license.  In most states they at least sus­pend a dri­vers’ license if they’ve got­ten pulled over for DWI for instance.  In Ohio at least, a lawyer can be sent to pri­sion and still retain his law license.  Guess being a mem­ber of the lawyer aris­toc­racy has its benefits.
