Ohio. Hear Ye! Hear Ye!
On this date in the Buckeye State, the Ohio Supreme Court voted to permanently disbar former municipal court Judge Don McAuliffe, age 64, who is currently serving a 10 year prison term at the federal prison in Morgantown West Virginia. McAuliffee was convicted in 2004 for arson, conspiracy, money laundering and mail fraud for participating in a scheme to burn down his Buckeye Lake house and collecting the $235,000 insurance payout. Guess he wanted to modernize the property.
According to the Columbus Dispatch, the Ohio Supreme Court held off disbarring McAuliffe until he’d exhausted his appeals.
So a law license isn’t like a drivers license. In most states they at least suspend a drivers’ license if they’ve gotten pulled over for DWI for instance. In Ohio at least, a lawyer can be sent to prision and still retain his law license. Guess being a member of the lawyer aristocracy has its benefits.
