Alabama. Hear Ye! Hear Ye!
On this date in the Yellowhammer State, the Alabama State Bar suspended x–Judge Herman Young Thomas’ bar tending license as a consequence of his indictment, by a Mobile County grand jury last week on charges ranging from kidnapping and sex abuse to sodomy and extortion– 57-counts in all.
According to Gary McElroy of the Press Register Thomas is accused of using his position to gain sexual favors from criminal defendants. In particular, young, male jail inmates.
Thomas, who resigned from the bench in October, 2007 had been practicing at Carter & Brandyburg, P.C. in Mobile, Alabama, which, according to the firm’s website, handles “[C]ar wreck injury, slip and fall, criminal defense, divorce, child support [and], probate matters.”
According to the Press Register article, “Thomas’ attorney, Robert Clark (Clark & Deen, P.C. in Mobile, AL), said Monday afternoon that he was ‘enraged’ to have been told about the suspension by a reporter, rather than being contacted directly by the State Bar.”
That’s certianly understandable. After such decisions are “leaked” to the press it becomes impossible to “appeal” them with a big bag of cash.
Thomas will appeal the Alabama State Bar’s decision, alledgedly.
