The practice of law in New Jersey is regulated by the Supreme Court of New Jersey. Complaints of lawyer / attorney misconduct are investigated and prosecuted by the Office of Attorney Ethics, the OAE. The OAE operates eighteen ethics and seventeen legal fee arbitration committees located in districts around the state. In addition, the OAE operates a random audit program (the Random Audit and Compliance Program) in order to ensure complaince with the state’s mandatory recordkeeping regulations. The New Jersey Bar Association is a voluntary bar association. In order to practice in the state, attorneys must apply to the New Jersey Board of Bar Examiners.
